Boat and Dive Rules

Thank you for choosing to explore our region of the Gulf of Mexico with Topcat. We thought it might be helpful for you to know what to expect and what is expected of you.

Boat Rules:
You will be riding on a custom designed and built 30 foot Power Catamaran, which is capable of a very safe, smooth ride. Captain Barrera is very familiar with the Gulf of Mexico and will assure that your trip is both safe and fun. He and his assistants will advise you on sea conditions, weather, and any other concerns necessary before and during the trip. You are encouraged to ask as many questions as you like to enhance your understanding and safety. We will do our very best to pick the most ideal dive sites within our range and the most appropriate for conditions. Although our boat is quite spacious, we must limit the amount of gear you bring on board. You are allowed the number of tanks for the given trip, one standard size dive gear bag, one smaller bag for personal items such as sun block, extra clothing, cameras and reasonable lunch and drinks. Your food and drink items will be transferred into an onboard cooler. We ask that you travel as light as possible.

Rig Diving Rules:
A dive briefing will be given prior to your first dive. Failure to adhere to dive limits, rules, and/or
safe diving practices will result in suspension of future dives without refund. The rules for diving are
as follows:

  1. You will not at any time exceed a maximum depth of 100 feet.  A Dive computer is highly               recommended.
  2. You will abide by all conservation rules/laws regarding fish, coral, and any other marine life. Trash will be kept on board until we reach the dock.
  3. You will utilize the buddy system of diving and be conscious of where your buddy is at all times.
  4. You will stay within the confines of the oil rig at all times except when you surface. The most ideal place to surface is the down current between the tied off boat and the oil rig. Be careful as you ascend, and look above you for obstacles.
  5. You will not go into decompression and or surface with less than 500 psi. If you should happen to lose sight of the oil rig you will immediately surface at not faster than recommended safe accent rates. Upon reaching the surface you will return to the boat.
  6. Equipment is to be donned in an orderly manner keeping your equipment confined to a small area. Be careful to not damage boat finishes with heavy dive equipment.
  7. Dive Certification Cards and Dive Log books should be made available to staff upon request.
  8. Spear fisherman will dive one gun between each buddy team unless cleared in advance with the Captain. Dive computers are mandatory for spear fishing. Fish stringers must be approved by Captain in advance.
  9. Scuba cylinders must be filled, have tank boots, and current VIP/Hydro.
  10. Specialty equipment such as cameras, video equipment, spearguns, etc. must be prepped and ready to go prior to departing the dock. Minor adjustments OK such as replacing film.
  11. Be careful to look in the water to make sure no one is underneath you before you enter the water. Give staff OK signal prior to submerging
  12. Un-prescribed drugs, alcoholic beverages and any other reality altering substances are strictly forbidden. Advise Captain of special health limitations and concerns. Welcome aboard and have a safe and fun trip.
