TopCat charter Company has been running scuba diving and fishing charters since 1999 with Captain John D. Barrera at the company’s helm. Captain John has been a Coast Guard Captain with a 50 ton Master’s License since 1996. He is very experienced with our area and has been sailing these inshore and offshore waters for the past 35 years. His specialty is ferrying scuba divers to offshore drilling platforms, wrecks and cutoff rigs. He is also a certified PADI Dive Master and is sensitive to the needs of Scuba Divers. Capt. John is very professional yet he remains quite personable, a rarity with salty captains. He is also an avid fisherman and also runs fishing charters specifically for that purpose.
Our current charter boat is a custom designed 30’ HydroCat offshore power catamaran with a 10’ beam that can easily handle six divers plus a dive master/coordinator. It is fitted with a custom build aluminum dive ladder that allows divers’ great ease boarding the boat after a dive. Power Catamarans are known for their smooth ride, load carrying capabilities, speed and stability in marginal sea conditions. This adds to both the comfort and safety of the passengers as our local waters tend to be choppy. This boat cruises at 25 knots and tops out at over 40 knots when conditions allow. This leads to a quick trip out to the 35 mile platforms when the seas are 3’ or less. Otherwise the trip out is usually about two hours. The boat is clean and well maintained and is gas powered as opposed to smelly and loud diesel engines. It is kept on a custom built trailer so we can utilize various ports, but we primarily use Bluff Landing in Flour Bluff. This is a full service Marina complete with Hotel, Restaurant and marina facilities. The restaurant will even prepare your catch for you at the end of the day.
